2016-2017 Frostbite Series- Round #5

FROSTBITE – Round #5
February 19, 2017

Blake arrived to the Herrin Compound on Saturday with 3 different motorcycles to ride. It was a practice day but with rain off and on and an oil spill that went around a lot of the track there was a lot of down time. There’s not a whole lot of clean up you can do for oil when it’s raining.

Frostbite Series Round #5

Grom Races

But race day was beautiful; the sun was shining it felt like spring and it was race day!! Blake entered five races on three different motorcycles. His first race was the Honda Grom class that he raced on his…you guessed it, his Grom. He did great off the start and got the hole shot. In turn #3 on the second lap Josh King passed Blake. Josh, Blake, and Kayla Yaakov stayed together the rest of the race. Blake felt like he could have gotten passed Josh but with Kayla right behind him he was racing defensively and not taking the lines he needed to get the pass. They all were putting down lap times in the mid 42’s. It’s funny how these little Grom’s is some of the best racing to watch.

His second race was on the Grom also in the Formula 3 class. This time he had a terrible start and then came in after just the first lap saying something was wrong with the shifting on his motorcycle. Mike worked on it and reconnected the shift link. Blake went back out just to get points for finishing (there’s cash to be won at the end of the series). Due to some crashes and Blake’s never-give-up attitude he finished in sixth place.

Stock 100 Race

Blake had an okay start for the Stock 100 race but the top 3 motorcycles pulled away pretty quickly. Blake caught up to 3rd place and was hoping for an extra lap feeling like he might have had time to pass. He was probably right; he put down his personal best on the 100 with a time of 44.2.

KTM 65 Races

The last two classes Blake raced on his KTM65 motorcycle. In the MiddleWeight class he got the hole shot, pulled a big lead over Gavin Anthony, Ashton Yates, & Kayla Yaakov. He saw he had this lead and slowed down a little…a little too much! Kayla was closing in on him. He picked his pace back up and finished in first place.

The last race of the day was the SuperMini class. Like I said before, Blake was on his KTM65 for this one. He started off okay and on the 2nd lap made a really good, tight pass right under the guys handle bars, shew. He was running good but his KTM65 was no match for the 150R’s that finished in the top 3 spots; Blake took fourth.

Thank You Herrin Compound!

Between Saturday’s practice and Sunday’s races there is a lot of fun in the “paddock”. You will find people camping, usually a fire to hang out by, kids playing together; it’s always a good time. We are thankful for Josh Herrin, the 2016 MotoAmerica Champion, his mom, and the rest of their family to opening their home track to the public and to inspire future MotoAmerica dreamers like Blake.
